Writing inspiration: What inspired you?

List five 001l stories that you’ve written or started. Where did the inspiration come for those stories? Can you get lightning to strike twice by finding an analogous way to be inspired? For example, if the ideas for a story came from walking through a geologically intriguing setting such as a desert canyon, walk through a different geologically intriguing setting, such as to a waterfall.

The theory behind Hypothesis vs. hypotheses

Writers Dictionary-1619740_1920often mix up these words, which leaves me scratching my head why.

Hypothesis is singular, as in The study’s results proved the first hypothesis to be true.

Hypotheses is plural, as in Researchers weighed competing hypotheses to determine which one merited testing.

A side note: In science, a hypothesis is a proposed explanation. It is tested and then the test(s) are duplicated by other scientists. Once several hypotheses supporting a theory are proven to be true, then the theory is thought to be true, at least in principle, as well.

Skip headers, footers, page numbers in ebook

Among the Ebook 27amost common novice writers formatting their ebooks run into is including headers, footers and page numbers in their manuscript. Unfortunately, this often leads to the book’s title, author’s name, and page numbers appearing in the middle of the text on an ereader.

There’s no need to include any headers, footers or page numbers in a manuscript formatted for an ebook. The software used to translate your formatted manuscript into a format readable on an ebook won’t treat the headers and footers as would your Microsoft Word program.

In any case, you don’t need to include a header indicating the book’s title in an ebook. At least with Kindle, the software that translates your formatted manuscript automatically places the title at the top of the ereader screen.

In addition, page numbers are superfluous in an ebook, as readers can adjust the text’s font and point size, and hence change how many words appear on a screen before the “page” has to be turned.

If reformatting your Word manuscript for a paperback into an ebook, always delete all of the headers, footers and page numbers from the document.

Five Great Quotations about Novels

“A novel 11 must give a sense of permanence as well as a sense of life.” - E. M. Forster

“I believe there are two ways of writing novels. One is mine, making a sort of musical comedy without music and ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right deep down into life and not caring a damn.” - P. G. Wodehouse

“In a novel, the author gives the leading character intelligence and distinction. Fate goes to less trouble: mediocrities play a part in great events simply from happening to be there.” - Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord

“The first chapter sells the book; the last chapter sells the next book.” - Mickey Spillane

“The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.” - Jane Austen

Best time to promote your book on Pinterest

When promoting Pinterest-1007135_640your self-published book, the social media tool Pinterest ought to play an important role in the marketing strategy. Knowing when to pin, however, can maximize your efforts.

According to a number of studies, the best time to pin is 2-4 p.m. weekdays and on Saturday mornings. This is particularly true for fashion and retail businesses, and one might extrapolate from that books, since they are retail products.

As the weekend approaches, more users tend to be on Pinterest. Peak use occurs at 3 p.m. Friday.

Of course, these times are relative. If your business is national, you need to pin over a longer spread of time than 2-4 p.m. in your time zone, or you’ll miss the peak times in other parts of the country. For example, if your business is based in Chicago (Central Time), you would aim messages for the East Coast (i.e. New York City, Philadelphia, Raleigh) at 1-3 p.m. Central Time and messages for the West Coast (i.e. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle) at 4-6 p.m. Central Time.

If you have limited hours to spend promoting your book, consider cutting Facebook but keeping Pinterest. Studies show that more social media users engage with retailers and brands via Pinteret than Facebook (55% vs. 48%). Note, though, that Facebook has more users than Pinterest, so in terms of raw numbers, those percentages may be irrelevant.

The absolute worst time to pin are morning work hours. Though people are on Pinterest during this time, the number of users drops considerably compared to the earlier mentioned peak hours.

Flow of knowledge: Pore vs. pour

Blame Coffee-1209090_1920 a little used and almost lost meaning of pore for the confusion between these two words.

A pore is a small opening, such as a skin’s pores. That makes it a noun. Pour means for something to flow rapidly and often continually, as in Pour me a glass of milk, please.

Usually the confusion regarding these two words occurs in the verb phrases pore over and pour over. Since pore typically is a noun, pour would appear to be the correct choice when writing a sentence such as He pored over the readout.

Pore, however, can be a verb meaning to meditate on. This verb is rarely used in modern times, but it is the source of the phrase pore over meaning to study closely.

Pour over only means to allow something to flow over another item, such as He poured milk over his cereal.
